Shelly Cummings MS, CGC

Shelly Cummings, MS, C.G.C. is the Director of Oncology Medical Affairs at Myriad Genetics, Inc. and a board-certified Genetic Counselor. Shelly received her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Psychology from Indiana University and her Masters in Genetic Counseling from Northwestern University.

Shelly joined Myriad in 2008 after being the Assistant Director and Senior Genetic Counselor in the Cancer Risk Clinic at the University of Chicago for 13 years. Shelly has held several roles at Myriad all with the focus of educating providers on the nuances of genetic testing and advocating for greater access to genetic services for all cancer patients. As a Medical Science Liaison, she developed collaborative research within the cancer community by partnering with academic leaders to increase access to risk assessment and testing while generating data to expand and simplify guidelines. In her Director position, while continuing her research efforts, she leads a team of medical experts across the US to raise physician knowledge and awareness of genetic services, testing, and appropriate medical management.

Shelly has authored over 80 original articles on cancer genetics in journals such as the American Journal of Human Genetics, the Journal of Genetic Counseling, Human Genetics, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Oncology. In addition to her peer-reviewed publications, she has edited/written five college genetics and biology textbooks for undergraduates. For the past 20 years she has been a volunteer writer and book column editor for the National Society of Genetic Counselors’ national newsletter, Perspectives in Genetic Counseling and is currently the Associate Editor of Perspectives. She is an active member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, the Collaborative Group of the Americas, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

In her free time, she volunteers weekly at a Therapeutic Riding Stable and travels the world.
